Lecta has partnered with energy group Naturgy to supply renewable biomethane gas for its manufacturing activities at Spanish mills in Leitza (Navarra) and Zaragoza, aiding in its decarbonization efforts.

The renewable gas supplied by Naturgy has certified guarantees of origin and sustainability tests that assure Lecta of the reduction of emissions derived from its industrial activity and the fulfillment of the sustainability commitments set in its 2030 agenda.

Mondi launches FlexiBag Reinforced

Mondi has launched the latest addition to its portfolio of sustainable pre-made plastic bags - FlexiBag Reinforced: a range of mono-PE-based, recyclable packaging materials with improved mechanical properties.

Contributing to a circular economy, the FlexiBag Reinforced range is recyclable where collection facilities and recycling systems for PE films are in place. The bags have been created in-house by Mondi, leveraging its integrated value chain. This means the materials can be tailored to different customers’ specific needs more cost-effectively.

Improved mechanical properties make the bag superior to previous versions – better puncture resistance, stiffness and sealability are offered. The level of barrier protection can be adjusted, providing medium to high barriers against fat, oxygen and moisture while keeping the content fresh - making it ideal for the pet food industry.

With FlexiBag Reinforced, Mondi proactively meets future regulative requirements. A customized percentage of post-consumer recycled (PCR) content can be added (based on mass-balance), significantly reducing the use of virgin plastics and promoting material efficiency by keeping materials in circulation.

mera, a family-owned German pet food producer has successfully introduced FlexiBag Reinforced containing 35 percent PCR content for its 10kg packs of vegan dry dog food. The implementation process was smooth to manage as the FlexiBag Reinforced was suitable for mera’s existing machinery.

Enes Tajic, purchasing manager at mera, said: ‘We firmly believe that in nature, everything is inter-related. We are passionate about animal welfare - and part of that is a commitment to sustainability. Working with our long-term, trusted partner Mondi meant that these new dog food products will be packed in a way that enables us to continue to create harmony between our furry friends and their environment.’

Jet Technologies brings sustainable Encore films to Australasia

Jet Technologies, one of the leaders in the print and packaging sectors in Australia and New Zealand, has implemented its Encore range of recycled content BOPP films in partnership with Impact Labels and Ultra Labels.

Jet Technologies offers a diverse portfolio that includes traditional BOPP and PET films and innovative sensory options like Soft Touch and Rough Touch ranges.

In recent years, the company has focused on sustainability, striving to provide genuine materials that meet the changing regulatory landscape and consumer expectations.

Encore films contain a significant percentage of recycled content, helping to work towards meeting the APCO 2025 targets of initially 30 percent and now 50 percent recycled content in all plastic used in Australia.

‘The challenge of sourcing high-quality recycled resin that meets strict standards has been met with the Encore range,’ said Jack Malki, director of Jet Technologies. ‘Initially introduced with a minimum of 20 percent post-industrial recycled content, this figure was quickly upgraded to 30 percent, with ISCC PLUS certification ensuring compliance. Recently, the inclusion of post-consumer waste resins has further enhanced the sustainability of Encore films.’

According to the company, Encore films offer the same quality and performance as traditional films at virtually the same price, making it easy for clients to transition to more sustainable practices.

‘The future of sustainable packaging looks promising with Encore films,’ added Malki. ‘As more high-quality recycled resins become available, the percentage of recycled content in Encore films will continue to increase, supporting printers and brand owners in achieving APCO targets.”

Two Australian converters, Impact Labels and Ultra Labels, have already endorsed Encore films for their performance and sustainable benefits, marking a significant step forward in recycle-ready packaging.

Impact Labels, a Brisbane-based, Australian-owned and operated player in the label production industry since 2006, has been using Jet’s Encore range for six months.

Harry McFadyen, production manager at Impact Labels, commented: ‘Our clients have been asking for an environmental solution for some time, and we decided to trial Jet’s range of Encore films. We found the performance both on-press and at the point of label application to be equal to the previously supplied laminates. The choice was easy to move all our laminated work to the Encore range to offer a more sustainable solution for laminated products.’

Ultra Labels, another leading label and flexible packaging manufacturer operating out of Brisbane and the Barossa Valley, has been using Encore films for more than a year.

Johnny Marusic, production manager at Ultra Labels, said: ‘Ultra Labels is known as a leading innovator in the label and digital flexible packaging space. Our clients expect that we use the most sustainable products in our production. We have found the Encore recycled film to be even better than the old film, with zero rejected rolls and improved adhesion to our print. As a result, we have move all of our laminated work to the Encore range.’

Fedrigoni partners with Premier for UK distribution

Fedrigoni Special Papers has signed a strategic agreement with leading merchant Premier for the distribution of myCordenons in the UK.

The partnership will allow for myCordenons, a historic Italian speciality paper brand, dating back to 1630, that has been part of Fedrigoni Group since 2018, to be even more accessible to British designers and printers.

Six myCordenons ranges will be stocked at Premier’s Minworth warehouse: myBohème, myKingdom, myReef, myNotturno, myLeatherlike, myFlora. The collaboration with Premier will enhance accessibility to high-end paper products for creatives thanks to the sample service and the next day delivery on the stocked ranges.

Among the uncoated papers is myBohème, a versatile range of felt-marked whites in four finishes, ideal for luxury brand packaging and myKingdom, available in the three variants (Laid, Wove and X-TS) encompassing a selection of white papers with a 15 percent cotton content suitable to elevate any corporate identity project. myFlora, with its partially recycled flecked surface and 10 percent cotton content offers a natural and sophisticated color palette, while myNotturno delivers an intense velvety black shade with one of the widest weight ranges in the market from 110 to 700 gsm. In the coated papers, myReef is a sandy textured range with pulp-dyed colors inspired by the ocean environment, while myLeatherlike is the coated embossed range inspired by luxury haute couture textiles. Its unique features make it appealing for statement packaging.

UPM Raflatac has received a new certificate of validity from leading international assurance service provider, Dekra, for its RafCycle recycling service validating the credibility of the CO2 impact assessments provided by RafCycle in Europe and the US.

The Fedrigoni Group has entered into an agreement to acquire a majority stake in BoingTech, a subsidiary of Shanghai Inlay Link Inc (a NEEQ-listed Chinese holding company) and one of the pioneers in the manufacturing of RFID inlays and tags, both UHF and HF/NFC, produced in its two plants (in China and Malaysia).

Shanghai Inlay Link will retain a significant share to ensure a smooth transition and continued business enhancement, while Fedrigoni will have the right to purchase the remaining shares of BoingTech in the future.

With this further acquisition, the fifth this year, the group continues the path of diversifying its premium product offering, reinforcing its role and size in the RFID inlay and tag manufacturing, and further expanding in Asia, following the acquisition of ArjoWiggins China in January.

After this strategic arrangement, Shanghai Inlay Link will maintain its existing activities related to the manufacturing of RFID antennas and full solutions provider through its dedicated legal entities.

Thanks to Boingtech acquisition, which is expecting a turnover of about USD 60 million for 2024 and more than 300 employees, Fedrigoni strengthens its position as a player in RFID, bringing additional value to customers in both its businesses of self-adhesives and specialty papers for luxury packaging and other creative applications, where it is increasingly important to track-and-trace products along the value chain, as well as to find solutions to protect brands, verify their authenticity and prevent counterfeiting but also to provide consumers with increasingly engaging shopping experiences.

Marco Nespolo, CEO at Fedrigoni Group, said: ‘The world of RFID is growing rapidly and is increasingly strategic for our group. This deal is a further step to significantly increase our size in the segment RFID inlay manufacturing, as well as widen our ability to partner with our customers, alike converters, printers and system integrators, and meet their needs. Coveris has launched MonoFlex Fibre, a paper-based range of flexible packaging that delivers high shelf-impact and recyclability within the existing paper stream.

Coveris' latest innovation has been developed to support market demands and brands to switch to recyclable plastics or paper packaging rapidly.

The Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation requires all packaging in the European market to be reusable or recyclable by 2030. The shift extends producer responsibility for the post-consumer stage of a product, including a special fee on plastic packaging material.

‘As part of our No Waste strategy, Coveris’ focus is on selecting the most eco-efficient and high-performing packaging for each product, rather than simply deciding between paper or plastic. By expanding our portfolio to include paper-based options and reducing plastic usage in packaging for items needing external protection, we aim to offer customers the best solution aligned with their brand vision and product requirements,’ said Melinda Bonamour, market development director for paper flexibles at Coveris.

The new packaging range is divided into two categories: MonoFlex Fibre Pure, which is a single layer of functional paper, and MonoFlex Fibre, a multilayer structure with maximized paper share.

Coveris presents several subcategories within each, both for primary and secondary packaging, offering excellent sealing and barrier properties.

Additionally, transitioning to the paper-based structure will not require major changes in the existing machine park of our customers, and has proved to be efficient and fast on common packing lines.

Regardless of the chosen option, each specification offers the right level of protection and barrier properties, whilst being fully recyclable in the existing paper stream.

Available as pre-made bags and FFS, the MonoFlex Fibre product range offers barrier properties against grease, moisture, oxygen, light or mineral oils.

The paper-based packaging also strengthens brand visibility on-shelf with excellent printability in roto, flexo and digital printing.

‘We aim to meet the needs of primary and secondary packaging for brands in various sectors, such as dry food, tea, confectionery, fresh produce, biscuits, frozen food and dried pet food, by providing full paper and recyclable paper/plastic structures. We are confident that these new solutions will be the go-to resource for producers seeking recyclable and effective paper packaging options,’ added Bonamour.

Constantia Flexibles and ExxonMobil develop recyclable freezer films

Constantia Drukpol, one of the Polish plants of leading flexible packaging converter Constantia Flexibles, has teamed up with ExxonMobil, a supplier of polyethylene resins, to develop an innovative freezer film for the ready-to-use plant-based food brand Bonduelle.

This collaboration led to the development of a mono-material polyethylene (PE) material designed to replace traditional multi-material metalized films, which can make the packaging easier to recycle and better suited for a variety of vegetables.

The new film can address the packaging needs for both ‘easy to pack’ vegetables such as peas and green beans and ‘challenging to pack’ vegetables like spinach and broccoli, which were the primary focus of this project due to their tougher packaging requirements.

Arnaud Warusfel, packaging development manager at Bonduelle Europe Long Life, said: ‘For our retail frozen bag category, we aimed to replace our historical multi-material metalized film, which can be difficult to recycle. We selected a mono-material PE solution without adhesives to facilitate easier recycling compared to multi-material solutions. Throughout the development process, we encountered numerous challenges but successfully overcame them with the technical expertise of Constantia Drukpol and ExxonMobil.’

‘The results were impressive: yhe new packaging has also been positively welcomed by the market in terms of quality and aesthetics,’ added Marc Rademacher, EVP of consumer commercial at Constantia Flexibles.

In the lab, the reinforced material for ‘challenging to pack’ vegetables demonstrated superior puncture and tear resistance, encouraging Bonduelle to conduct a factory trial. The film performed excellently on Bonduelle’s vertical form fill seal (VFFS) packaging line, showing robust abrasion resistance and maintaining high speeds, which were key to its adoption in addition to a marketplace acceptance for Bonduelle brand to stand out on shelves.

Constantia Drukpol was selected for its strong HD flexography printing expertise and experience in blown coextrusion film, lamination, laser cutting, and pouch-making.

‘ExxonMobil was responsible for polymer production, and our team at Constantia Drukpol focused on film production and excellence in printing. The results were impressive: The new packaging has also been positively welcomed by the market in terms of quality and aesthetics,’ concluded Rademacher.
