Baker Self Adhesive Labels upgrades stock picking and roll handling with Hugo Lift

UK trade label printer Baker Self Adhesive Labels has invested in a Hugo Lift for its state-of-the-art facility in Brentwood, Essex to address working at height issues, improve its stock picking capabilities and simplify the handling of rolls of material.

HLS devised a custom-built roll transfer device to fit to the adjustable cargo shelf on the Hugo Lift

The Hugo Lift, supplied by workplace equipment specialist Height, Lift & Shift (HLS), removes the requirement for cumbersome aircraft steps, takes up less valuable floor space, and benefits both the safety of employees and the productivity of the facility, Baker Self Adhesive Labels said.

The company is using the Hugo Lift to pick stock in its warehouse, but also tasked HLS with addressing problems caused by having to load material rolls onto a Nilpeter press, which sometimes weigh up to 42kg and have to be loaded onto the drive spigot of the press at a height of around 2.5m from the ground.

HLS carried out a full survey of the workplace and the loading/unloading activity, and devised a custom-built roll transfer device to fit to the adjustable cargo shelf on the Hugo Lift.

With the roll transfer device fitted, manual handling of rolls by operators has been virtually eliminated, and in addition the operation can now be carried out by just one operator, making the process more efficient as well as safer.

‘We are known for innovation,’ said Steve Baker, owner and managing director of Baker Self Adhesive Labels. ‘It drives our business forward and differentiates us from our competitors. When I first saw the Hugo Lift, I knew it could streamline our working at height and material handling issues.’

The Hugo Lift has also provided an option for carrying out other working at height activities, such as maintenance tasks like changing factory lights and cables. ‘We saw it as a useful tool for removing several health and safety issues,’ added Steve Baker.
