FPA announces 2025 Flexible Packaging Achievement Award winners

The Flexible Packaging Association (FPA) has announced the winners of its 69th Annual Flexible Packaging Achievement Awards competition. The awards were presented during a special ceremony at the FPA’s Annual Meeting in Miami, Florida.

This year’s competition saw 67 package submissions, resulting in 226 entries, as some packages competed across multiple categories. Ultimately, 20 packages were honored with 34 Achievement Awards.

Special thanks were given to the 2025 competition judging panel: Dr Bilge Altay, assistant professor of packaging and graphic media science, at College of Engineering Technology, Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT); Chris Lyons, group president at Packaging Impressions magazine; and Scott Wilkins, founder and lead consultant at Scorcia Packaging Resources.

The Highest Achievement Award, evaluated by the judges as possessing overall packaging excellence, significant attributes in all award categories, and contributing most to the advancement of the industry, was presented to ProAmpac’s White House, TN-plant for its printing job for Nestlé Purina PetCare Company.

This curbside-recyclable package is compatible with widely accessible recycling streams, providing consumers with an option that ensures product protection. It features solid print quality and grease resistance. Designed using ProAmpac’s advanced material technologies, it offers barrier properties for enhanced shelf life, convenience for consumers, and reduced environmental impact. Supporting Nestlé Purina’s commitment as an Ellen MacArthur Foundation signatory, Pro-Evo Recyclable FL aligns with circular economy initiatives and sustainability targets.

‘The entries provided an excellent representation of current trends and key drivers in flexible packaging, particularly in sustainability,’ noted Wilkens. ‘Around 70 percent of the submissions were either entered into the sustainability category or demonstrated clear advantages of flexible packaging over alternative structures. The range of innovations was impressive, including store drop-off solutions, all-PE structures, compostable films, and packaging incorporating post-consumer recycled (PCR) content.’

Commenting on printing innovations, Lyons added: ‘We saw outstanding examples of rotogravure, digital printing, and other advanced print production techniques. The market is fully leveraging the diverse range of printing technologies available. It’s exciting to examine each package and see how its print capabilities enhance shelf impact and deliver exceptional quality.’

Altay commented: ‘In reviewing the entries across both conventional and digital printing technologies, we saw companies effectively utilizing flexography, gravure, and digital printing. Each process showcased its unique strengths. Flexo and gravure printing demonstrated exceptional color consistency and high-resolution graphics, particularly in high-volume applications. Meanwhile, digital printing stood out for its versatility in short-run production while maintaining impressive color quality comparable to long-run printing.’

Heidelberg celebrates apprenticeship program success

Nearly four years ago, Heidelberg USA re-launched its apprenticeship program in response to the country's growing shortage of skilled labor. The vocational training initiative, designed to cultivate a new generation of field service technicians, has proven successful, with several graduates now employed full-time by Heidelberg.

Currently, the program is training 25 apprentices across its sheetfed, post-press and Gallus product lines – its largest group to date. With plans to hire an additional eight apprentices within the year, the program is filling a critical skills gap and serving as a model for how companies can invest in their future workforce.

The program spans 18 to 36 months and combines classroom instruction at the company’s Print Media Performance & Training Center (PMPTC) in Kennesaw, GA and hands-on field training alongside a journeyman mentor within Heidelberg’s network of service technicians.

Apprentices are hired throughout the year, often beginning in the field and returning as a class to the PMPTC for a Fundamentals Training Course that covers every operating, electrical and mechanical function on a Heidelberg press in addition to pneumatics, software and application.

‘Bringing them in as a group helps build camaraderie and even friendly competition,’ said Kimberly Wicker, skills development supervisor for Heidelberg. ‘This dynamic empowers them to rely on each other. Even as they move across the country, they frequently connect to share tips and troubleshooting challenges together.’

‘They really rely on Kimberly, especially in the early stages, for approval to ensure they’re meeting requirements,’ said Mike Koeberlein, vice president of lifecycle operations for Heidelberg. ‘She keeps everything on track and ensures service managers stay engaged with the apprentices.’

Apprentices are paid throughout the training period, receiving per diem for travel and food, their own set of tools and the ability to qualify for a company-paid car. Each apprentice can graduate the program at his or her own pace. After demonstrating mastery of a pre-defined list of technical skills, the apprentices will begin as trained service technicians specializing in one of Heidelberg’s many product areas with the opportunity to have lifelong career growth with the company.

Currently, Heidelberg USA boasts 25 apprentices at varying stages of completing their training. Of that, nine new hires are set to begin their Fundamentals Training course at the PMPTC in April.

While the classes continue to grow, Heidelberg remains proactive in its efforts to refill its diminishing service force with a goal of having two classes of ten students per year. Koeberlein added: ‘The workforce is different today. People don’t often stay someplace for 20 or 30 years anymore, so we’ll need to continue to refine our program based on that dynamic as well.’

As part of its ongoing efforts to update and upgrade its press portfolio, Diversified Labeling Solutions (DLS) has added a Mark Andy P7 servo press to its Chicago (Itasca) plant. This investment aligns with DLS's commitment to modernization and efficiency while maintaining its production capacity.

The new press provides several advantages, including tighter registration control for higher printing speeds, job memory for repeat orders and improved overall efficiency, which translates to faster customer turnaround times.

Its advanced curing system features a double UV/LED lamp, enabling faster production while allowing DLS to use a broader range of materials, inks and varnishes. This increased versatility helps accommodate a wider variety of label applications and customization needs.

Combined with its flexographic capabilities, these features ensure cost-effective production of large-quantity orders that are weather-resistant, fade-resistant, and suitable for industrial applications.

TLMI has promoted Linnea Keen to president and chief executive officer and Dale Coates to chief operating officer, effective immediately.

Keen has been an integral part of TLMI since joining in July 2020, demonstrating exceptional leadership, vision and dedication. In her previous role as president, she spearheaded numerous initiatives that have significantly advanced the association's mission and goals.

In November 2020, Keen recruited Coates to refocus efforts on membership growth and retention and to facilitate improvements in operations. Coates has been instrumental in enhancing member experiences and driving engagement initiatives significantly contributing to the association’s success.

‘Under Keen's leadership and with Coates’ support, TLMI has achieved remarkable milestones,’ said Mark Glendenning, board chairman. ‘We are confident their expertise and commitment will continue to drive our association forward.’

In her new role as president and CEO, Keen will oversee all aspects of the association's strategic planning, represent TLMI in the greater industry, and manage key member and partner relationships. She will also continue championing regulatory and sustainability issues impacting the TLMI membership and industry.

As chief operating officer, Coates will oversee the association's day-to-day operations, ensuring seamless execution of strategic initiatives and fostering a culture of excellence. She will continue to lead efforts in member engagement and operational efficiency, reinforcing TLMI's position as a leader in print.

‘I speak for both Dale and me when I say we are honored to take on these expanded roles and lead TLMI into the future,’ said Keen. ‘I look forward to working closely with Dale and the rest of our talented team and dedicated members to build on our successes and explore new growth opportunities.’

Keen holds a BS in Electrical Engineering from the University of South Alabama and an MBA from Western Carolina University. Coates holds a BS in Physics/Engineering from Washington & Lee University and a PhD in Polymer Science from the University of Connecticut, Institute of Materials Science. Both were former supplier members of the association.

Michael Bates has joined GMH UV, a GEW’s sheetfed distributor for North America, as a partner to Grieg Heimbuch. He will manage sheetfed offset and wide web offset business in the Western US and Mexico, whilst Heimbuch manages the Midwest, Eastern US and Canada.

Bates has served the printing industry for over 40 years. He spent six years as a Pressman Printer, followed by 17 years in sales at Heidelberg US. He also gained subsequent experience as a press demonstrator and press salesman, including two years with KBA. Latterly, Bates has been in sales for AMS/Baldwin, for over 15 years.

Based in the Midwest, GMH UV is a dedicated partner and distributor of the GEW UV product line for the sheetfed industry in North America and provides full sales coverage throughout the territory. The company is supported by a multimillion-dollar parts inventory and a large and experienced service team at GEW Inc. in Ohio. All service and spare parts are delivered through GEW’s established infrastructure, while GMH UV focuses on sales and business development.

‘I am delighted to work with Grieg once again,’ commented Bates. ‘It’s a very exciting prospect, and the opportunities are huge. Grieg has done an amazing job building the business to date, but its great success means that more resources are urgently needed, particularly in the West.

US-based Applied Adhesives has partnered with UK-headquartered Power Adhesives to distribute its Tecbond biodegradable hot melt adhesives in North and South America.

In September 2024, Power Adhesives developed the Tecbond 214B, which is claimed to be the world’s first biodegradable hot melt adhesive. Traditional hot melts are usually made from petroleum-based materials and can negatively impact the environment.

In contrast, the Tecbond 214B hot melt is 45 percent bio-based and 100 percent biodegradable. It will break down naturally when exposed to oxygen, UV light and heat without leaving behind any harmful chemicals. It is also ASTM D6400, EN13432, and FDA 175.105 certified.

Power Adhesives is now working on creating a full range of biodegradable product assembly and packaging adhesives, including the new Tecbond 110B used in high-speed packaging applications. These products will meet more niche needs for companies looking for more sustainable solutions than traditional hot melts.

Flint Group, an inks and coatings specialist for the printing and packaging sectors, has opened a new distribution facility in Montreal, Quebec, to expand its support for label and narrow web customers in Canada.

The facility will warehouse and distribute Flint Group’s water-based, UV curable, and UV LED dual-curing inks, as well as coatings for narrow web applications. Previously, customers in the Quebec region had relied on Flint Group’s Toronto facility for their ink supply requirements.

This expansion doubles the company’s distribution presence in Eastern Canada. The new location will provide faster delivery times and improved product access for regional customers.

Additionally, Flint Group’s regional commercial team has recently expanded with an experienced field technical service representative to provide dedicated support to customers in Quebec.
