Production Print Direct receives Konica Minolta accreditation

UK-based Production Print Direct has received the country's first formal Production Print Accreditation. The accreditation recognizes the company’s commitment, dedication and investment in selling, servicing and supporting Konica Minolta’s products.

Production Print Direct has followed the requirements roadmap to achieve this distinction. This included in-depth technical and support staff training to provide full support and investing in a dedicated Konica Minolta Production Print showroom at the company’s facility in Burnley, Lancashire.

This new facility provides direct access to and use of Konica Minolta’s Client Engagement Centre in Houghton Regis near Luton, allowing direct product demonstrations and training for Production Print Direct’s customers across the UK.

Specialist narrow web printing ink manufacturer Pulse Roll Label Products (Pulse) has teamed up with Mark Andy for free open house in Warsaw, Poland,, on Thursday September 26 showcasing Monolox, the fixed anilox printing process that is claimed to make flexo printing simple and puts an end to lengthy, cost-intensive anilox changeovers.

Jim Whitehead, export sales director with Pulse, said: ‘We’re looking forward to demonstrating to print customers how the combination of our cutting-edge LED flexo inks and Monolox fixed anilox printing will benefit their businesses. In a market driven by shorter run lengths, fast turnarounds, and increasingly complex graphic designs, every penny matters. Converters seeking to remain competitive need to carefully consider how their investments will improve their quality and throughput.

‘Enabling printers to produce any spot color with just one anilox volume, the Monolox system reduces the associated downtime of anilox selection, minimizes waste, and cuts variability out of label printing.’

Monolox is made possible by advancements in ink technology and a mixing database. Using the PureTone series of high-strength, single-pigment bases that can achieve a delta E of less than two, combined with all the information required for instant color matching, printers can produce any half or full tone from just one anilox. With no need to change anilox rollers between jobs, converters significantly improve their productivity while driving efficiency, the company said.

‘This open house event hosted by Mark Andy in Poland will feature live print runs and demonstrations that highlight the variety of benefits Monolox can help businesses unlock. From cost savings through the range of aniloxes needed, the amount of set-up material used and volume of ink wasted, through to productivity gains from a standardized anilox selection, with simplified color matching increasing press uptime and ensuring consistent quality,’ Whitehead added.

Another benefit of Monolox is its rapid turnaround, pit-stop rivalling make-ready that puts flexo within touching distance of digital, while using less ink and curing with LED also contributes to achieving sustainability goals, a major issue for today’s converters, according to the company.

‘The strength of the PureTone inks used in the Monolox system means consumption is reduced by 30 percent on average,’ added Whitehead. ‘With less ink printed, printers not only benefit from lower expenditure but also cause less harm to the environment through unnecessary raw material use and the associated greenhouse gas emissions.’

CELAB and TLMI join forces for label release Liner Recycling Initiative

After several years of operating independent programs to research and identify recycling solutions for silicone-coated label release liners, TLMI and CELAB North America have announced a partnership to merge their efforts under a unified TLMI project called the Liner Recycling Initiative (LRI).

TLMI and its implementation partner, Resource Recycling Systems (RRS), will be reaching out to interested partners within target regions to participate in the six-month pilots. The TLMI goal for the initiative is a national recycling program for users of labels with silicone-coated paper release liner.

The pilot will be aimed at both small and large generators of silicone-coated paper release liner and built around regional end markets in the upper Midwest or the Northeast.

One of the mill operators has already tested and qualified a silicone-coated release liner, which is a major step in helping the supply chain establish best practices and developing a roadmap for generators on how to divert this material from landfills and recycle it in a high-value market.

‘The goal of the initiative is to build on the work done to date by both organizations and conduct regional pilots,’ said TLMI president Linnea Keen. ‘These regional pilots will qualify silicone-coated paper release liners with known recycling and end markets before scaling the program through a deliberate build-out. Collaboration with CELAB will expand and elevate all existing liner recycling programs and advance marketplace solutions more quickly.’

Tim Rummel, acting president of CELAB North America, added: ‘The collaboration between TLMI and CELAB, along with the proven track record of RRS, will bring significant value and focus to what each group has been working on independently.’

Flexographic Technical Association (FTA) has reported that Kenny Tucker has joined the association as its manager of training services and Julia Kaible has joined as its creative specialist.

In his role, Tucker will engage with members regarding FTA’s elite First Certification training programs, which are industry-recognized achievements. Those who successfully complete this training are equipped with the knowledge to produce high-quality and consistent results, press run after pressure for their consumer packaging customers.

‘We are thrilled to have Kenny on board with FTA. The manager of training services is a unique position and finding someone with his industry knowledge, understanding of First Training and experience with FTA - is a major win for our members,’ said Joe Tuccitto, director of education and co-interim president of FTA. ‘In addition, he will be well-known to our members since he has been a presenter at prior FTA events. I expect him to quickly become a key resource.’

Tucker’s recent role as assistant director at the Sonoco Institute of Packaging Design and Graphics at Clemson University and prior positions at Sealed Air Corporation, and Anderson and Vreeland, give him a perspective that should resonate well with FTA members.

Kaible was with FTA as a contractor and assisted with marketing for Forum, Infloflex, and the Fall Technical Conference, creating email campaigns and marketing materials, as well as developing marketing packages.

‘It is fantastic to have Julia back with FTA in this new role. I believe her creativity and ability to think outside the box will bring a fresh new approach to our communication efforts,’ said Tuccitto. ‘She has already begun to demonstrate her innovative strategies and ability to enhance brand visibility and, the always important, member engagement.’

In her new role, Kaible will support the creation of dynamic digital content and advance the association's visual identity through innovative design approaches. She will also play a key role in the development of a new website, collaborating closely with the creative team to ensure a seamless and engaging user experience. Her efforts will be crucial in boosting the association's brand visibility and engaging industry professionals with forward-thinking creative projects.

New report demonstrates huge potential for digital label growth in Saudi Arabia

The digital printing industry in Saudi Arabia is poised for substantial growth across a wide range of retail and e-commerce sectors.

As the MENA region’s graphic arts and packaging industries gear up for the first Gulf Print & Pack exhibition in Saudi Arabia next year, a new report demonstrates the astonishing growth potential of the Saudi digital printing market.

The report, compiled by consultancy Astute Analytica, predicts that the Saudi digital print sector will generate revenues of US$ 766.58 million by 2032, up from US$ 351.33 million in 2023 - a CAGR of 9.24 percent during the forecast period 2024-2032.

This surge in demand for digital printing solutions in Saudi Arabia is largely driven by the Kingdom's ambitious Vision 2030 initiative, which aims to diversify the economy away from oil with a commitment to sustainability at its core.

The Astute Analytica report identifies retail, education, and advertising as key drivers of growth. The retail sector alone has seen a 15 percent increase in demand for customized packaging and promotional materials.

The report estimates that government initiatives to support small and medium enterprises (SMEs) have resulted in a 25 percent increase in the number of businesses utilizing digital printing services for branding and marketing purposes.

This rapidly growing market demand has already led 40 percent of printing businesses in Saudi Arabia to invest in digital printing technologies.

At the same time, the sustainability benefits of digital printing, including reduced waste and lower energy consumption, have made it an attractive option to help meet government sustainability targets.

The rising number of internet users, now exceeding 33 million, further emphasizes the potential for digital marketing and print media convergence.

Saudi Vision 2030

The extraordinary growth prospects of the digital printing industry in Saudi Arabia are propelled by the Saudi Vision 2030 initiative, which aims to diversify the economy and reduce its dependence on oil.

The Saudi economy hit a GDP of $1.747 trillion at the end of 2023, representing a GDP per capita of $32,586, demonstrating a stable economy and increasing consumer spending power - a conducive environment for business expansion.

The Kingdom's commitment to adoption of cutting-edge technologies is reflected in its investment of $6.4 billion in the digital economy and the establishment of over 300 tech startups.

The recent hosting of the Global AI Summit in Riyadh underscores the government’s dedication to integrating artificial intelligence across industries, offering digital printing companies an opportunity to enhance their services with AI-driven solutions.

The Kingdom's strategic initiatives, such as the $500 billion NEOM (a project to build a new kind of sustainable city), are expected to create demand for high-quality printed materials across a range of sectors.

The report points out Saudi Arabia's population has a median age of 30.8 years, presenting unique market opportunities for culturally sensitive and visually appealing print materials. By leveraging these trends and opportunities, digital printing companies in Saudi Arabia can position themselves for significant growth and success in this fast-evolving market.

Digital labels

The growth of the consumer economy in Saudi Arabia increasingly favors digitally printed labels. This trend is driving a growing demand for personalized and visually appealing packaging, especially in the food and beverage sector.

Consumers are becoming more conscious of the content and quality of the products they consume. This has led manufacturers to invest heavily in high-quality, informative, and attractive labels to meet these expectations.

The rise of e-commerce has further fuelled the demand for digitally printed labels as online retailers seek to differentiate their products through unique and eye-catching packaging.
Additionally, regulatory requirements, such as the need for halal certification and compliance with the Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) standards, have made it imperative for manufacturers to invest in high-quality labeling.

With brands increasingly adopting neuromarketing methodologies to create labels that attract consumer attention within the first five seconds of observation, the Astute Analytica report concludes that the color digital label printing market in the Middle East and Africa, which includes Saudi Arabia, will continue to grow significantly. The Saudi printing industry, with an annual turnover of $800 million, is already the largest in the Gulf region.

Supplier landscape

The report finds that the digital printing market in Saudi Arabia is highly competitive, with Canon, Epson and Fujifilm among the top six players, collectively holding over 58 percent market share.

According to these players, the shift to digital production in the Kingdom is being driven by the adoption of IoT and AI-based technologies, which are expected to provide lucrative growth opportunities going forward. The demand for short-run and variable printing is on the rise, aligning well with the capabilities of digital printing technologies.

Furthermore, the Saudi government's diversification initiatives, aimed at reducing dependence on the oil industry, have led to increased investment in the printing sector, accelerating the adoption of modern printing technologies. This has created a favorable environment for major manufacturers like Canon, Agfa, Fujifilm, Kodak, HP, and Mimaki to introduce the latest digital printing innovations to the market.

It should also be noted that the report’s authors count 3D printing (additive printing) as part of the growing digital landscape. This could also represent a future avenue of growth for GPP.

In summary, the digital printing industry in Saudi Arabia is poised for substantial growth, driven by technological advancements, diverse sectoral applications, and supportive government policies.

Gulf Print & Pack

Gulf Print & Pack will be held for the first time in Saudi Arabia between 14 - 16 January at the Riyadh Front Exhibition Conference Center (RFECC). Building on the success of the established Dubai-based Gulf Print & Pack, the exhibition will showcase the latest in packaging technology, commercial printing, and packaging equipment. Gulf Print & Pack will now be annual event alternating between Riyadh and Dubai, with the next GPP Dubai exhibition in 2026.

Innovia to showcase functional label materials at Labelexpo

Innovia Films has confirmed it will showcase its latest portfolio for the labels, packaging and graphics industries at Labelexpo Americas in Chicago, including sustainable filmic materials, label and packaging films with recycled content and barrier functions as well as PVC-free graphic arts films made from polypropylene.

Some highlights are sustainable and functional BOPP label materials for pressure-sensitive, wraparound and in-mold labels, along with Rayofloat shrink sleeve film specifically developed to support the recycling of PET, HDPE and PP bottles and containers.

‘As the industry-leading filmic label solution provider for all major decorations technologies, we have been working on materials that not only follow the principle of reduce, re-use and recycle but also support recycling of the finished package, while at the same time providing the right barrier functions needed to prevent food waste,’ commented Jon Knight, vice president and general manager for Americas at Innovia Films.

‘With continued capital investment in the pressure-sensitive label segment, including top coating and extrusion, we have new technologies that offer unparalleled performance while improving sustainability,’ added Knight.

Innovia will present its latest products, including the Rayoface CPE and WPE, thinner printable label films with a reduced carbon footprint and the Rayoface JBD, a semi-solid film with enhanced yield and opacity compared with solid white films.

Innovia recently announced the extension of its low-density, floatable polyolefin (PO) RayoFloat shrink sleeve, a sustainable alternative to existing materials detrimental to recycling. The Association of Plastic Recyclers (APR) has endorsed the RayoFloat material as compatible with existing waste streams in the US.

‘We are proud to share our extended range of floatable shrink sleeves that work in established PET, HDPE and PP waste streams,’ said Knight. ‘We can now offer several options – from a high shrink version to a thinner version to a white version that is ideal for light-sensitive products like dairy, vitamins and supplements.’

Rayoart PVC-free graphic films, also promoted by the company at the show, lower the environmental impact of self-adhesive graphics. They are based on biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP), a type of plastic with clear sustainability advantages that is inherently more recyclable than PVC. These films suit most short and intermediate indoor and outdoor applications and offer a product performance comparable to PVC-based graphic films.

‘We are excited to showcase these innovations to our customers and other visitors at the Labelexpo Americas and discuss how these filmic materials can help deliver a better future for our industry and facilitate our stakeholders’ goals of re-designing packaging to become more circular,’ concluded Knight.

Labelexpo Americas will take place from September 10 to 12 in Chicago. Innovia will be exhibiting in booth 1221.

Labelexpo Global Series has announced new areas highlighting industry topics and trends at Labelexpo Americas 2024, the Americas’ largest label and package printing technology trade show. The show will take place from September 10 to 12 at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont, Illinois.

The FlexPack @ Labelexpo will feature a focused area for flexible packaging and shrink sleeves, allowing attendees entering this high-value market to see the latest equipment and materials from leading industry suppliers in the flex pack sector.

The new FlexPack @ Labelexpo will highlight key technologies for label converters interested in diversifying into flexible packaging production and traditional wide-web flexible packaging converters wishing to amplify their operations.

Companies confirmed as participating in FlexPack @ Labelexpo include Karlville, Gonderflex, S-One LP, ABG, Mamata, Protect-All, Novaflex, Bonset American Corporation, Sanzip re-closable zipper and Nobelus. In addition, three times a day, attendees will have the chance to attend a short introduction to flexible packaging, presented by HP.

A flexible packaging master class, which will take place on September 10, will guide how label converters can enter or expand into this lucrative market.

Brook + Whittle has received recognition from the Association of Plastic Recyclers (APR) for its GreenLabel BlockOut light-blocking shrink sleeve, which meets or exceeds the voluntary requirements for APR Design for Recyclability.

Additionally, How2Recycle has evaluated the technology and has pre-qualified it as widely recyclable on eligible clear PET bottles. The recognition from both organizations highlights Brook + Whittle’s commitment to advancing circular packaging solutions and its role in driving sustainability in the labeling industry.

The APR Design for Recyclability Recognition program evaluates the materials, components and design of packaging to ensure it is compatible with recycling systems and can be effectively recycled.

Brook + Whittle’s recyclable light-blocking shrink sleeve has been recognized for its innovative design, which meets high recyclability standards and offers protection for light-sensitive products.

How2Recycle is a standardized labeling system that clearly communicates recycling instructions to the public. It aims to make recycling easier and more transparent by providing consistent and accurate information on how to recycle various types of packaging.

South Korean labeling and flexible packaging equipment manufacturer Anytron has confirmed it will introduce the new Any-Jet II Plus digital press at Labelexpo Americas 2024. This latest version of the Any-Jet II features several improvements and introduces new features to the American market.

The Any-Jet II Plus has been developed to deliver high-speed, high-resolution digital printing, while providing printing quality and color accuracy for various label applications.

The key features include an integrated laminator for added label durability and laser cutting, facilitate intricate designs and reduce reliance on traditional die-cutting methods, streamlining production and shortening setup times.

The Any-Jet II Plus supports roll-to-roll labels and full-cut stickers and is equipped with a conveyor system designed to lower labor costs and production times.

Anytron will also showcase Any-Press, a 13-inch CMYK+W toner printer developed to offer a compact, versatile alternative for in-house label production aimed at smaller businesses.
