Sun Chemical launches SunPak PowerPace inks in North America

Sun Chemical has launched SunPak PowerPace in North America, the newest generation of vegetable-oil-based sheet-fed offset process printing inks, designed to optimize productivity on super high-speed presses when printing on folding carton applications.

This new ink technology features press color stability, fast drying and low misting properties. These inks can reduce the time and number of sheets required to yield desired colors, resulting in less paperboard waste during and after printing.

‘We are delighted to present the SunPak PowerPace ink range to our North American customers,’ said Jim Bishop, product manager of offset packaging inks at Sun Chemical. ‘The newest solution from our PACE varnish technology line improves ink stability and consistency on super high-speed presses and enables a more sustainable workflow through reduced board waste. SunPak PowerPace meets the demands of our industry partners for environmentally friendly solutions that don’t compromise on performance.’

SunPak PowerPace inks are compatible with a wide range of paper stocks, including low-integrity paperboard. Formulated to reduce delamination of clay coatings during high-speed print operations, these inks also help reduce the frequency of blanket washes.

The new ink technology allows lower ink settings during the printing process, lending to higher print fidelity and a wider ink and water window. With 10-20 percent lower water settings needed during the lithographic process, SunPak PowerPace dries more rapidly than standard conventional sheet-fed inks.

SunPak PowerPace inks were specifically developed for the super high-speed printing machines, running at 21,000 iph+. The color strength of these inks has been optimized to provide enhanced mileage: SunPak PowerPace inks are ISO2846:1 compliant, supporting G7 requirements, and meet Graphic Measures International (GMI) standards. With high levels of bio-renewable materials and no environmentally problematic PTFE wax, SunPak PowerPace provides a more sustainable ink option for printers.

Coveris extends SourceTag security technology to carton packaging

One of the leading European packaging manufacturers, Coveris, has extended its built-in, covert security offer to include printed cartons, tackling rising theft rates in the fresh meat, beverage and luxury goods sectors.

According to Coveris, the high levels of retail theft in the UK currently cost multiples of around 1.8 billion GBP a year. To tackle the issue, the company has introduced its new SourceTag cartons.

As an extension of the existing label-tag offering, fully automated, integrated security cartons work with in-store electronic article surveillance (EAS) antenna systems as an anti-theft solution and deterrent for high-value FMCG lines.

Unlike previous technologies that require secondary tagging to be hand applied in store - increasing SKUs, costs, and the need for additional application/removal, Coveris’ new SourceTag cartons enable the integration of a covert RF (radio frequency) tag, applied to the inside of the carton during the existing print and conversion process.

Supported by a new investment in in-line tagging technology, composite security cartons provide a covert and seamless solution that does not compromise brand and delivers huge supply-chain efficiencies, shrinkage reduction and cost savings.

Edale, a British manufacturer of flexographic presses for the carton and label sectors, has entered the Chinese market having secured a new deal with a premium folding carton converter, Kava.

Announced at drupa 2024, Jiangsu-based Kava is to install a flexo-based FL5 press and servo-driven web-fed FDC-600 flatbed die-cutter, creating a fully in-line single-pass carton production system. Notably, the investment sees the first Edale machines installed in the Chinese market.

Jiangua Wang, CEO of Kava, said: ‘As we revealed at drupa, our decision to invest in Edale technology is driven by our need to consistently push our capabilities. We have traditionally relied exclusively on offset printing for our folding carton production, but when it became clear that we needed to expand our capacity and quality, Edale’s advanced flexographic technology was the way to go. It’s bringing all the best elements of flexo to carton packaging production.

‘The Chinese market demands agility and quality at speed. Our Edale FL5 press and FDC-600 die-cutter investment will give us the power to produce even intricate designs and small jobs at lightning speed.’

The Edale FL5 is designed as a versatile single-pass carton press, capable of running any reel-fed substrate and is built and tailored for ultimate configurability, with different finishing options available. It can combine printing, cutting, creasing, braille embossing, cold foil stamping, varnishing, lamination and waste stripping in a single pass.

Challenging printing tradition, the business notes that a skilled operator can complete a single pass from raw material to finished carton in just under one minute. Run in-line with the FL5 press, the FDC-600 flatbed die-cutter uses a servo-driven constant tension web transport system to create the single-pass folding carton production line.

Ian Eccleston, sales manager, Agent Network at Edale, commented: ‘The challenges that Kava aims to overcome are real pressure points for carton converters around the world, and classic offset printing can be a major workflow headache when multiple passes are needed. This is slowing the entire supply chain down, adding costs and stretching the workforce to capacity. Founded in 1982 by William Beyer, Sr. as a provider of custom folding cartons, Beyer Graphics, located in Commack, NY, has become one of the leading packaging companies specializing in the pharmaceutical, nutraceutical and cosmetic industries. The company provides packaging such as custom folding boxes and cartons to over-the-counter, pharmaceutical, vitamin, supplement and cosmetics clients.

Arden Group acquires Lasercomb Dies

Arden Group, based in Marple, Stockport, UK, has completed the acquisition of Lasercomb Dies which operates a die-making and engraving arm, with manufacturing site in Redditch, UK, with a team of around 80 employees. The conditions of the agreement were not disclosed, and the operations will continue as normal following the takeover.

Martin Poynter, managing director of Arden Group, said: ‘Much like Arden, Lasercomb is a leading name in die-making and engraving, so we’re delighted to bring its skills and expertise in the flatbed folding carton market into the Arden Group. While it will be very much business as usual for the long-established Lasercomb brand, we’re excited about the opportunities it presents for our customers and our combined workforce.

‘With Arden located in the North and Lasercomb in the Midlands, this acquisition will support our ambitions to expand our operations and better meet the needs of our customers across the UK and beyond, as we consolidate our efforts and share our combined knowledge of the industry.

The family-owned Arden Group of companies comprises Arden Dies, Arden Engraving and Arden Software. Founded as a die-makers in 1964, this year the Arden Group celebrates 60 years in business.

Meanwhile, this year marks 40 years in business for Lasercomb, which was founded in 1984 as a manufacturer of press ready die tooling systems for the print and packaging industries.

Poynter, added: ‘2024 is a very special anniversary year for both Arden and Lasercomb, so it feels very apt that this acquisition presents a unique opportunity to combine a century of knowledge, innovation, and industry expertise, as we build on a new future together.’

Both Arden and Lasercomb are Bobst certified die-makers, which is an advanced certification for professional die-makers to provide high performance tooling.

Arden takes over the business from the three current shareholders and directors: Mark Ridings, Alistair Baxter and Mark Guest. Baxter will stay on as sales director and the current managing director Mike Allsop will also continue in his role.

Speaking on behalf of the shareholders Ridings said: ‘Reflecting on our journey with Lasercomb, we’re proud to have been part of an organization that has garnered a solid reputation as one of the UK’s leading and best-known die-makers. Koenig & Bauer and Durst Group both committed to building further R&D capability in the joint venture company to capitalize on the significant opportunities in folding carton and corrugated segments. It leverages the capabilities and know-how of its parent companies to offer a portfolio of digital printing machinery that includes the CorruJET and Delta SPC 130 systems for corrugated markets, as well as the jointly developed VariJET 106 press for folding carton markets.

All presses use water-based, food-safe inks and coatings that comply with all regulatory requirements.

Velema has extensive domain experience in the printing industry and managing consultancy and has held various senior-level management positions. In his last role, he was general manager of the pre-press activities at Xsys Global.

QLM opens production facility in Vietnam

The newly designed factory consists of areas focused on different printing technologies, including flexo label printing, offset printing for soft folded cartons, digital printing technology for labels and sheets as well as the newly installed digital flexible packaging printing and finishing equipment.

The investment in upgraded equipment and expanded production lines provide enhanced options and productivity for the label and packaging market, particularly in the emerging flexible packaging area.

The event also celebrated the 50th anniversary of the QLM Group and the 25th anniversary of Hoang Ha Label, Vietnam's oldest privately owned label manufacturer.

The leadership team from the QLM Group joined over 200 guests to reflect on the group's journey and have an opportunity to experience the latest state-of-the-art equipment and technologies in operation.

Speaking at the event, Dang Tan Khoa, managing director of HHLC-QLM Vietnam, said: 'From a modest scale with a few 1-2 color flatbed machines, HHLC-QLM Vietnam has expanded the factory to 6,000 square meters, offering diverse services to provide comprehensive labeling and packaging solutions for domestic and international partners.

'Over the years, we have consistently prioritized technology as the focal point of our development. We are committed to continually upgrading technology and technical standards to adapt to the market's diverse needs.'

In 1997, HHLC-QLM Vietnam pioneered applying 6-color letterpress printing in Vietnam. In 2014, the company adopted Vietnam's first HP Indigo digital label press, and now in 2023, HHLC-QLM Vietnam has further invested in HP Indigo digital flexible packaging - installing Vietnam's first HP 20000 press.

The company intends to expand its flexible packaging services, including a stand-up pouch, three-sided seal, center seal, sachets, and box bottom bag.

Sarah Hooper, Australian consul general in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, officially opened the new production facility.

During the opening event, Simon Pugh, managing director of the QLM Group, commented: 'Today, as we celebrate 50 years of providing labels and packaging, we do so with our eyes firmly to the future.

One of the largest commercial printers in Hawaii, Edward Enterprises, has further diversified into the folding carton market with the latest installation of Heidelberg Speedmaster CX 104, a six-color press equipped with UV curing, which replaced two older presses.

After fifty years of commercial printing, Edward Enterprises began producing its first folding cartons almost ten years ago when it installed a Varimatrix die-cutter and Easygluer folder gluer from Heidelberg.

According to Alex Upton, vice president of operations for Edward Enterprises, while there was a slow learning curve at start-up, Heidelberg was there every step of the way, educating and training the company staff year after year.

Shifting more of its business from commercial to packaging printing was always part of the company’s long-term plan, but in 2020, the pandemic accelerated that shift even faster.

Wanting to improve its packaging capabilities and efficiency further, Edward Enterprises installed a new Speedmaster CX 104-6+L to replace its 25-year-old CD 102 and XL 75. Since installation, the press has cut the company’s maintenance costs and consumables usage in half.

‘Our need for a new press was pure necessity,’ said Upton. ‘We planned to purchase one earlier, but then the pandemic happened. Our CD 102 had over 350 million impressions, and its outdated UV and coating system limited our capabilities and the type of folding carton work we could run.’

Running at 15,000 sheets per hour, the new CX 104 has increased the company’s print capacity. The new press is equipped with Heidelberg’s latest technology, which includes autonomous Push-to-Stop technology and a completely new operating philosophy, the Heidelberg User Experience (UX).

Coupled with the patented Intellistart 3 and other assistance systems, Heidelberg UX has been developed to ensure short make-ready times and the best possible support for press operators throughout the press run.

Edward Enterprises selected the CX 104 based on its speed and the types of jobs and quantities the company typically runs.

According to Upton, Heidelberg played a big part in helping to determine the specs that would best serve its existing customers and our expected growth. After running only a few months, the CX 104 produces more work in two eight-hour shifts than the company could produce with three ten-hour shifts on its two older presses.

Edward Enterprises has significantly reduced its production time and waste thanks to the press’s state-of-the-art UV curing system. To boost its efficiency further, Edward Enterprises choose to use Heidelberg’s Saphira Consumables and Prinect Production Manager.
