Bobst demonstrates processes at opening of Manchester technology center
- AlOx process uses the controlled injection of oxygen into the aluminum vapor stream to cause a reaction between the two elements to produce aluminum oxide

- Bobst general hawkeye pinhole detector is monitoring system that at full metallizer speed can detect, count and categorize pinholes and other defects from 0.1mm upwards

Bobst showcased two technologies at its first Open House event in Manchester, UK at the start of October.

The Open House event on October 10-12 attracted 40 customers to the new Bobst technology center in Heywood. Delegates came from markets around the world including Europe, North America, Canada, China, Pakistan and India.

Delegates were able to see firsthand the clear coating (AlOx) process and Bobst general hawkeye pinhole detector.

The Open House event also acted as the official opening of the Bobst technology center in Manchester.

Technical presentations in the purpose built sales lounge were followed by two demonstrations on a Bobst General K5000-2850 in the new demonstration area.

The first technical presentation and demonstration focused on the AlOx process, where Bobst uses a standard aluminum metallizing machine as a basis, which results in versatility as one machine can be used for two processes without compromise.

Bobst technology uses the controlled injection of oxygen into the aluminum vapor stream to cause a reaction between the two elements to produce aluminum oxide (AlOx). This compound can be transparent if the process conditions are correctly controlled.

The application is available for coating a wide range of films including PET, BOPP, CPP, PLA and other types of plastic film. The coated film can be used for end products including baked goods and microwaveable products.

A second technical presentation and demonstration of the Bobst general hawkeye pinhole detector followed.

Hawkeye is a monitoring system that at full metallizer speed is able to detect, count and categorize pinholes and other defects from 0.1mm upwards.
