Sainsbury sets new barcode standards

One of the UK’s top supermarket chains, J. Sainsbury has announced a new code of practice relating to bar codes, including reading of product codes applied using ‘print & apply’ labelling.

Instructions have now been issued to over 2,500 suppliers to meet the requirements of Sainbury’s new fully automated fulfilment factories, the first of which has been opened at Ham’s Hall, based in Birmingham.

One of Sainsbury’s key requirements is EAN-UCC pallet labels, allowing their scanning along with the SSCC (serial shipping container code) on arrival at the new factory. This is to ensure that the label matches the advanced shipping notice.

Sainsbury’s recently installed four Logopak ‘print & apply’ labelling systems at its Stoke location as part of a large OEM integrated turnkey package.
