Mondi launches sustainable development action plan
Mondi has released Mondi’s Action Plan (MAP2030), a 10-year sustainability action plan designed to tackle global issues across the value chain, listing its commitments to circular-driven technologies, empowering people, and taking action on climate.
‘Sustainability is at the heart of Mondi’s purpose, strategy and culture,’ said Andrew King, Mondi’s CEO. ‘We operate in diverse and complex geographies and as a business that is fully integrated throughout the supply chain. I am excited by the potential to make a real difference with our new 2030 commitments touching every part of our business. Delivering on these focus areas, working with our colleagues, customers, suppliers, and partners to make a positive contribution to a better world, will be a top priority for Mondi.’
MAP2030 is built on a foundation of responsible business practices spanning business ethics and governance, human rights, communities, procurement, and environmental impact. Each area has commitments and targets to guide our action, including work on human rights due diligence, ongoing investment in communities; 100 percent of wood fiber compliant with reasonable standards; and detailed air emission and water targets to minimize the environmental impact.
All areas are aligned to the UN Sustainable Development goals as part of Mondi's focus on being sustainable by design, underpinned by targets and KPIs.
Mondi has committed to developing innovative packaging and paper that keep materials in circulation and prevent waste. This includes a target to make 100 percent of its products reusable, recyclable, or compostable by 2025.
The company will be developing an empowering and inclusive team, with a key target is to increase female representation across all levels at Mondi from 21 percent to at least 30 percent by 2030. This requires four in ten hires to be women throughout the next decade.
Finally, by taking action on climate, the manufacturer will be focusing on climate resilience through its forests and operations for the planet's future. Targets include reducing its greenhouse gas emissions in line with science-based targets and maintaining zero deforestation in its wood supply as its business grows.
‘Our 2030 commitments build on our previous achievements and align with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals timeframe,’ commented Gladys Naylor, group head of sustainable development at Mondi. ‘Mondi has made several strategic sustainability-related investments across its operations in recent years and has invested more than EUR 700 million in modernizing energy plants and improving energy efficiency since 2013. Over the last five years we have invested more than EUR 50 million in local community initiatives and will continue to provide a similar level of support going forward. We have also set aside a quarter of our forestry landholdings for conservation and the protection of biodiversity and achieved a 100 percent certification in our own forest landholdings.
‘MAP2030 will help us to monitor, improve and communicate our performance. Over the next decade, we will focus on the three action areas where we can make the most impact and drive real change towards a more sustainable future.’
The plan builds on Mondi’s existing sustainability work, which saw the group move to science-based targets for scope 1 and 2 emissions and supports the business strategy with sustainability at its heart. Mondi has already reduced its CO2 emissions by 45 percent since 2004 and was recognized in 2020 by CDP as one of only ten companies worldwide with a ‘Triple A’ score on its environmental performance related to climate, forests, and water security.
