Winners announced in 2016 Alufoil Trophy
The European Aluminium Foil Association (EAFA) has presented this year’s Alufoil Trophy prizes, with 11 winners showing the ‘versatility and practical advantages’ of aluminum foil to create highly original new developments as well as fresh ideas to enhance existing products.
The Alufoil Trophy competition is organized each year by EAFA, and is open to products which are either made from aluminum foil or contain aluminum foil as part of a laminate, structure or packaging system, as well as aluminum closures.
Alufoil Trophy prizes are presented in five categories, Consumer Convenience, Marketing and Design, Product Protection, Resource Efficiency and Technical Innovation, with 65 entries received this year and 10 category winners chosen, as well as an Overall Excellence winner.
‘The sheer variety and diversity of the entries clearly demonstrates how innovative the alufoil sector can be,’ said Louis Lindenberg, global packaging sustainability director at Unilever and the head of this year’s judging panel. ‘There was a very fine line between those who won an Award and those who missed out, such was the highly original thinking and quality of manufacturing which went into all the products entered.
In the Consumer Convenience category, the winners were: Ampac Flexibles for its Protein Shake Pouch entry; Ardagh Group and Amcor Flexibles for All in One Fondü; and Constantia Flexibles for Ofen-Fleischkäs'.
Winners in the Marketing and Design category were: Alupak and Lavít for Lavít Capsule and Guala Closures for Sunrise.
Constantia Flexibles was the sole winner in the Product Protection category with Sustainer, an environmental friendly alufoil container system for pet food.
Constantia Flexibles also won in the Resource Efficiency category for Blister Eco, while Amcor Flexibles also won a prize in this group for Formpack Ultra.
Amcor Flexibles also claimed an award in the Technical Innovation category for LuxPrem+, alongside Hydro for HyLectral.
The Overall Excellence prizes was claimed by Huhtamaki Flexible Packaging for Refilly, a three-dimensional round pouch consisting of four elements, all produced of aluminum-based laminates, created for Italian coffee company Illy.
‘Even for regular, well established and popular packaging formats, such as containers and aluminum closures, there were a huge amount of fresh ideas combined in the need for performance, sustainability and visual impact. Consumers and the environment will both benefit from these clever, yet commercially viable products,’ added Lindenberg.
