Adphos, provider of digital drying, has concluded an engaging in-house workshop, ‘Transformation from gas dryers to digital drying – aNIR /aLITE game changing technologies’, in November at its premises in Bruckmuehl, Germany.

The workshop highlighted advancements in thermal drying, offering industry professionals an in-depth understanding of adphos’ digital aNIR and aLITE technologies. Through expert-led lectures, live demonstrations, and interactive sessions, attendees gained valuable insights into how adphos technology is driving efficiency and sustainability in modern production lines.

Participants were introduced to the advanced capabilities of aNIR /aLITE drying systems, which offer a superior alternative to traditional gas dryers. Presentations delved into the advantages of these innovative technologies including high-efficiency, electro-thermal systems designed to replace conventional gas dryers. Significant reductions in operational costs and faster processing times. A reduction in carbon footprint, supporting environmentally friendly manufacturing practices.

The workshop also showcased real-world applications and installations where gas dryers have already been replaced by aNIR /aLITE systems.

A standout feature of the workshop was the exclusive tour of adphos’ company premises. Attendees inspected a ready-to-ship production system, gaining first-hand insights into the advanced design, flexible configurations, and scalability of adphos’ products.

Live demonstrations brought the capabilities of aNIR and aLITE to life, showcasing their drying precision and versatility across a wide range of industrial processes.

To complement the technical program, attendees enjoyed an evening social event at a local brewery. This informal gathering provided an opportunity to network with peers, exchange ideas with industry experts and strengthen professional relationships in a relaxed and enjoyable setting.

Todaytec, supplier of thermal transfer ribbon, has confirmed that it will present its latest research and development achievements and flagship products at Labelexpo Mexico 2025 taking place from April 1-3, 2025, at Expo Guadalajara, Guadalajara.

The company will present several products at the show.

TDW108, as a standard wax ribbon, has been recognized by global customers for more than ten years for its good printing performance, wide range of substrate compatibility and competitive price. Low printing energy consumption and improved backcoating protect the printer's print heads and effectively extend the service life of the print heads, the company said.

TDW136 is an enhanced wax ribbon with strong scratch resistance and high sensitivity. Its strong scratch resistance is comparable to a common wax-resin ribbon. Its substrate compatibility and printing blackness was appreciated by customers as soon as it went on the market, the company reported.

As a cost-effective general wax-resin ribbon, TDM242 can print well on various substrates at low printing temperature. Besides its scratch resistance and high blackness, it offers printing of small characters and fine lines.

TDR345 is a high-performance cost-effective resin ribbon. With high printing blackness, media adaptability and alcohol resistance, it is widely used in electrical appliances, equipment, electronics and other industries.

TDR382 is a premium wash care ribbon with high sensitivity and superior substrate compatibility. Its imprint is clear and dark on both dense care labels and sparse woven labels. Apart from dry cleaning and washing resistance, it also has sand washing resistance.

DMP901 is a hot stamping foil which can be printed at low temperature. It has strong media adaptability, high printing quality, and blackness. It can be printed on various hard and soft labels and flexible packaging.

Transforming sales in the era of convergence

Following up from the fall trade shows, now is the perfect time to explore your internal sales enablement strategies.

Are you looking at a pile of business cards and cool new samples collected at Labelexpo Americas and other fall trade shows? Attendees and exhibitors came to meet, share, learn and invest. I was inspired by the level of enthusiasm for new technology at these events. Several Labelexpo attendees were seeking ideas to expand capabilities with inkjet and digital technologies, and we saw new offerings for embellishments, substrates, inks and coatings.

Consumer behavior changes

The trade show focused on new technologies as consumers’ buying habits are changing. Increasing consumer awareness and concern for packaging’s contribution to global environmental stress, plus new regulatory rules are accelerating the adoption of more efficient labeling, packaging materials and designs.

New sales approaches needed

I asked attendees who were looking at new production technologies if their salespeople were using the same old tactics despite changing buyers and new capabilities. I also asked if they were losing work to new competitors. ‘Yes’, to these questions indicates it’s time to get clear answers to ‘Why do your customers do business with your company?’

Ongoing B2B sales research indicates that there are two things individual buyers rank more important than price. The most effective salespeople regularly ask and have clarity about what is most important to key customers and projects. Part of a predictable sales discovery process is defining customers’ business goals and metrics for large projects and programs beyond quality and timeliness.

Great salespeople ask and understand customers’ business goals and project metrics before gathering detailed job specifications. Salespeople who understand why customers need to print can offer ideas to improve production and business results.

Sales teams must prioritize spending quality time with decision-makers to expand relationships. Without knowing clear business objectives, price becomes a bigger factor in the decision criteria

Suppose your salespeople don’t know the ‘why’ for major customer projects, it’s a symptom of not being in regular contact with decision-makers. Sales teams must prioritize spending quality time with decision-makers to expand relationships. Without knowing clear business objectives, price becomes a bigger factor in the decision criteria.

Can 85 percent of your salespeople sell all your capabilities? I rarely get a ‘yes’ to this question. What will it take to change the mindset so your salespeople can confidently sell all the applications and services your company provides? The gap is a result of insufficient training, miscommunications, with some fear and lack of confidence added to the mix. Addressing the gap means regular communications about new capabilities, investments, training and producing samples to demonstrate new applications.

Sales enablement

Effective leaders understand their critical role in supporting sales enablement across all departments. Sales and customer service teams must trust and feel supported by estimating, pre-press, production and billing to win and keep new customers. Leaders who articulate and align the entire company with a clear strategic vision and defined capabilities will motivate sales and production teams to win and produce more. At company and team meetings, leaders must reinforce the big-picture goals and vision. With this clarity, leaders enable staff and managers to make better decisions every day.

You can read more about sales enablement strategies in previous editions of the Labels & Labeling magazine. Sales enablement means getting the entire company to support the sales process, and celebrate wins by the entire company, not just the sales team.

Successfully growing companies follow defined and repeatable sales processes. Salespeople who trust the rest of the organization will exude confidence when they suggest new ideas and applications to customers. This is one approach to regularly identifying new sales opportunities within your current customer base.

Multitec secures five deals at Labelexpo India 2024

The company showcases its newly launched mid-web S2 presses that are specially crafted for the flexible packaging market.

India-based flexo press manufacturer Multitec has clinched five deals, including three 670mm wide narrow-web and two 450mm wide flexo presses, at Labelexpo India 2024.

Multitec demonstrated its 9-color, double-servo mid-web S2 press, featuring a 670mm web width. Capable of running 12-micron substrates at speeds of 200m/min, the S2 highlights its high efficiency and advanced material-handling capabilities.

Talking about the press, Amit Ahuja, managing director at Multitec, said: ‘We are presenting our mid-web flexible packaging presses in the Indian market. People in labels are transitioning into short-run flexible packaging for pouches, shrink sleeves, etc. It is the latest trend globally, and we see it growing.

'Our machines were developed to transform the flexible packaging landscape, positioning them as the optimal choice between digital printing and CI flexo or rotogravure technologies. Printers and converters can get everything under one roof when they come to Multitec.’

Designed with a heavy-duty frame, the S2 operates free of vibrations, ensuring smooth and consistent performance. It also features advanced anti-bounce technology, which minimizes bounce-related issues, allowing for greater precision and print quality during high-speed runs.

This press is suitable for converters looking to break into the short-run flexible packaging market. It offers versatility for applications such as pouches, shrink sleeves and in-mold labels (IML).

The S2 features intelligent, centralized digitized operation and advanced systems, including LED and high-powered UV curing, an extended-path in-line solvent drying unit, pre-register, auto-register and automatic job settings. Additional capabilities, like a movable turn bar and foiling options, allow converters to easily handle various jobs. Converters can create high-end products with soft-touch varnishes, foiling and other value-added finishes in flexible packaging.

The second S2 press, demonstrated at the show, was a 450-mm wide, 8-color double servo model that could print shrink sleeves. It includes hybrid LED UV curing systems, die-cutting units, pre-register and auto-register, a movable turnbar, delam-relam units, a peel-and-seal kit and foiling stations.

Both presses in the S Series can handle substrates ranging from 10 to 450 microns, running at speeds of up to 200m/min, while delivering registration accuracy and minimal setup waste.

Esko Pack Proof secures Fogra55 certification for ECG printing

Esko Pack Proof has become the first image processing software to secure the prestigious Fogra55 certification for Extended Color Gamut (ECG) printing, offering confidence in color matching.

The Pack Proof software models the spot color and expanded gamut ink systems to print brand colors to deliver a contract proof that matches the final packaging. The new Fogra55 certification adds to its existing Fogra39 and Fogra51 accreditations which demonstrate the ability of the Esko product to match ISO12647-7 quality.

‘We are thrilled with this world-first achievement,’ said Martin Cusack, product manager for color and digital at Esko. ‘Accuracy of brand colors is of paramount importance in packaging, with a key challenge for converters being maintaining consistency between plate production and proofing. This new certification complements our existing Fogra certification to demonstrate how using Pack Proof now makes it possible to output industry standard proofs first time, enabling businesses to maximize press production and reduce errors.

‘Adding Fogra 55 to Fogra39 and Fogra51 assures Esko customers that they can enjoy improved quality, efficiency and therefore productivity – all with the full confidence they are meeting the industry standard specs, every time.’

Fogra, the German Research Association for Printing and Reproduction Technology that provides certifications for the printing and media industries, assessed the latest version of the Esko Pack Proof software, which is available to all users of the Esko software platform.

‘The process is straightforward but rigorous,’ added Cusack. ‘We had to output, measure and submit Epson proof samples to Fogra, which was undertaken by the team at our facility in Itzehoe, Germany, using an Epson SureColor SC-P7500. These were then submitted for analysis and to ensure they met all the strict criteria.’

The Fogra55 certification is particularly important as it is the standard for ECG printing, becoming increasingly crucial to modern print packaging converters.

‘More and more businesses today are dealing with increasingly complex designs, and using the ECG process enables them to handle these, incorporating double hit colors and large solids for example, without affecting press stability to recreate the desired design,’ commented Cusak. ‘We have a large number of customers around the world using our Equinox solution for the implementation of extended gamut printing, so it was hugely important to us that we demonstrate how successfully our prepress software can further accelerate and simplify the process for them.

‘Equinox allows businesses to print faster with superb quality while lowering printing costs. It standardizes printing presses on a single set of inks, delivering savings on materials and plates for packaging work and also saving significant amounts of time as the press changeover workload between jobs is reduced to merely changing printing plates.

‘In terms of sustainability, the ECG process serves to reduce the amount of ink being consumed, which not only saves on costs but also in terms of the environment, helping reduce a business’s own carbon footprint through minimizing shipping and logistics as well as ink use and waste. Not only that, but because there’s no cleaning of ink units between different print runs, converters reduce the use of cleaning solvents with VOCs.’

Esko Pack Proof integrates with the Automation Engine workflow automation, part of the Esko ecosystem that accelerates the entire process from concept to shelf.

Henkel wins Finat Sustainability Award 2024 for adhesive

Henkel Adhesive Technologies has received the Finat Sustainability Award 2024 in the 'optimization of recycling' category. The company received the award at the Sustainable Packaging Summit in Amsterdam.

Finat, the international association for the European label industry, presented this award in recognition of Henkel’s work in developing a sustainable wash-off adhesive that improves the recycling process for PET bottles.

The long-running FINAT Sustainability Awards honor sustainability initiatives in the label industry. A total of 28 entries were submitted for the 2024 edition of the awards, ranging from adhesives to new recycling methods.

Henkel's award recognized its Aquence PS 3017 RE product, a water-based acrylic pressure-sensitive adhesive that is specially designed for olefinic filmic labels used for PET bottles. The Finat Sustainability Awards judging panel highlighted benefits such as the low washing temperature for some selected label constructions, along with the fact that it can be used on PET trays and offers a non-water whitening effect for clear labels.

Aquence PS 3017 RE offers wash-off efficiency at temperatures as low as 65 degrees Celsius, reducing the amount of energy used in the recycling process. It also safeguards the purity and value of the recycled PET materials. The recyclability of Aquence PS 3017 RE has been certified by the cyclos-HTP institute. In addition to fulfilling the European Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation requirements, the product also meets the rising demand for sustainable labels.

Aquence PS 3017 RE had its market launch at Labelexpo Europe 2023.

The adhesive was tested on Henkel Consumer Brands’ high-speed labeling systems at speeds of up to 300 labels per minute and qualified for well-known cleaning product brands.

'We plan to step up our collaboration with label manufacturers to promote the adhesive’s use in additional applications involving polyolefinic labels on PET bottles and containers. We also aim to further optimize the product for other packaging solutions,' says Elodie Picard, head of sustainability packaging at Henkel.

Bria, a visual generative AI platform, and HP, a global digital printing company, collaborated with Eurostampa on their eighth Envelope project.

The Envelope project is an initiative where brands, technology providers and university students collaborate on creative design challenges while experimenting with technologies, materials and printing. The students challenged Bria and HP to reimagine Nutella's label through the lens of different art movements, including Cubism, Impressionism and Pop Art, with the goal of making each jar a unique artistic statement.

Eurostampa, which makes labels for wine, sparkling wine, spirits, chocolate, food and cosmetics packaging, has been collaborating for several years with students from the University of Gastronomic Sciences of Pollenzo, Italy, and the DAAP (Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning) Program of the University of Cincinnati, Ohio. The eighth iteration of this initiative, Envelope 8, focused on harnessing AI to create Nutella labels.

Bria uses licensed content to train its models, ensuring responsible image generation with proper royalty attribution. Bria's platform creates customized visual content while complying with copyright and privacy regulations.

Integrating Bria’s platform into HP SmartStream Designer's 'HP Spark' technology enabled the creation of 9,000 unique Nutella labels. This demonstrates AI's potential to transform the variable data printing industry. HP SmartStream Designer, a component of the PrintOS Creativity Power Pack, provides capabilities for variable data printing. The software enables designers to create unlimited variations of packaging designs and utilize 'HP Spark' for automated, AI-driven design generation, all while maintaining consistent quality across large-scale personalized printing runs.

The Envelope 8 project showcased these capabilities by combining AI-generated designs with Eurostampa's HP Indigo digital presses.

'This collaboration represents a significant leap forward in the way leading brands can effectively utilize risk-free visual generative AI while simultaneously prioritizing creativity and personalization by ensuring predictability and controllability of the outcome,' said Yair Adato, co-founder and CEO of Bria. 'By successfully merging visual gen AI applications with industrial printing capabilities, the project sets a new standard for both customized product packaging and the commercial use of visual gen AI as a whole.'

'This proof of concept for Nutella exemplifies the transformative potential of combining gen AI, design expertise and digital printing technology,' said Joan Perez-Pericot, vice president and global head of software and solutions at HP Industrial Print. 'The project demonstrates how collaborative innovation can revolutionize personalized packaging, creating unique consumer experiences while maintaining brand consistency.'

Korozo and Zertus develop Baileys stand-up pouches

International flexible packaging specialist Korozo Group has partnered with Zertus UK and Ireland for the introduction of an award-winning snack range that has helped Baileys with its transition from an after-dinner tipple to an anytime adult treat.

Baileys Chocolate Nut Mix is a new range developed to continue to take the renowned Irish cream liqueur into new product categories, such as the adult snack market. The product itself combines chocolate-coated almonds, a mix of caramelized almonds, cashews, hazelnuts and peanuts with a hint of Baileys flavor and salted toffee popcorn.

To get this product onto retail shelves and into the hands of consumers, Zertus UK and Ireland collaborated with Korozo Group for the development of new stand-up pouches. Printed in eight colors using the flexographic process, in addition to the application of a partial surface matte lacquer, Korozo’s proprietary KoroRCY film was laminated to a PE layer with EVOH component to achieve the required barrier properties that ensure product integrity without compromising the recyclability of the stand-up pouch. Laser scribing was used to create an easy-tear opening and a zipper is integrated for the resealing of opened packs.

Irem Altinay, field sales manager, food flexibles for the UK and Ireland at Korozo Group, said: ‘For this important product launch, packaging was required that was highly functional but also striking on the shelf. Our advanced flexographic printing technology was used to create the strong visual appeal needed to ensure on-shelf success, with a sophisticated look and feel that mimics the luxurious and indulgent nature of the product.

‘Our expertise in developing sustainable packaging solutions meant we were able to provide a pack that was recyclable and resealable, supporting the brand’s sustainability goals while keeping the product in tip-top condition through the supply chain.’

Success has also been achieved at the recent The Grocer New Product & Packaging Awards, where Baileys Chocolate Nut Mix was crowned Champion in the ‘Crisps, Nuts & Bagged Snacks’ category.

Louise O'Reilly, product development manager at Zertus UK and Ireland, said: ‘Adult snacks and the festive nut mix category are competitive spaces with crowded retail shelves. Winning The Grocer award is evidence of the product’s successful entry into the market.

‘This is complemented by packaging that is effortlessly functional and visually appealing. With consumers preferring convenience and quality while at the same time seeking out sustainable options and products, Korozo Group was the perfect partner to provide the flexible packaging solution for this product.’

Konica Minolta has confirmed that it will bring its latest innovations in production and embellishment printing to the forefront of the Middle Eastern market at Gulf Print & Pack 2025. The show takes place between January 14 – 16, 2025 at Riyadh Front Exhibition Conference Center.

With a prominent 244sqm stand (F13) in the exhibition’s front row, Konica Minolta will be showcasing products designed to drive business growth, optimize workflows, and enhance print capabilities for customers worldwide.

Visitors to Gulf Print & Pack 2025 can explore Konica Minolta’s range of technologies, including MGI embellishment technology, which adds striking decorative effects to printed materials, and label printers, ideal for high-demand applications.
