Print processes: lithographic printing
This article explains the principles and workings of the offset lithographic printing process, as used in the label industry, and features both conventional offset and waterless offset printing.
HISTORICAL EVOLUTION
The word 'lithograph' historically means ‘print from stone.’ Developed as an economic means of reproducing artwork, lithography used printing stones produced from limestone, benefiting from their flat, porous surface on to which a greasy image was created and water applied to the stone to produce the print and non-print areas.
