Avery Dennison adds to MDO film product line

Avery Dennison introduced the latest addition to its Machine Direction Oriented (MDO) film product line, Global MDO, at Labelexpo Europe.
The new film laminate is said to bring productivity and sustainability improvements, such as a reduction in web breaks, up to 50 percent less ooze, an inherently printable film and double the amount of labels per roll – balanced with the on-shelf label clarity demanded for home and personal care applications. It is said to bridge the gap between the MDO film range and PE85 film.
Combined with PET23 liner, Global MDO offers the label market a differentiated film in the high-volume home and personal care (HPC) market. It is said to provide the base for beautiful clear film labels, delivering differentiating appeal on-shelf and during consumer use.
The strength of the labelstock, which has a 50 Micron MDO film and 23 micron polyester liner, is claimed to virtually eliminate line shut-downs due to web breaks.
‘Avery Dennison’s new S7000 water-resistant adhesive increases productivity with up to 50 percent lower ooze and excellent wet-out performance,’ said the company in a statement. ‘The complete construction is approximately 50 percent thinner than today’s standard product of PE85 film on glassine liner, so Global MDO delivers almost twice as many labels per roll, improving operational efficiency throughout the supply chain.’
It is also claimed to give brand owners enhanced sustainability: independent life-cycle assessment research has proven that compared to standard products, Global MDO – driven by lower material usage – produces 40 percent less solid waste, consumes 37 percent less energy and reduces greenhouse gas emissions by 10 percent.
‘In the past, you’ve always had to compromise,’ said Kent Stobbart, product marketing director for Avery Dennison label and packaging materials Europe. ‘You could get a thinner label material, but it would lack rigidity. If you wanted conformability you gave up clarity. With Global MDO you don’t have to make these compromises anymore.’
