Sherwood Press innovates Kinnerton Easter egg packaging
Kinnerton, one of the UK’s leading manufacturers of chocolate and novelty confectionery challenged Nottingham based Sherwood Press to reduce the environmental impact of its packaging by developing a folding, recyclable box fitment for its 2012 range of Easter egg, mug and bar sets.
Sherwood’s innovative 3D constructional design team delivered a solution that required minimal post-production assembly, and provided the strength to support the weight of the mug and egg, without any movement.
Lee Wills, Kinnerton’s print & packaging manager commented: ‘Sherwood has helped us to deliver a greener product for Easter 2012 by removing plastic from the range, and boosted factory performance by 116 per cent. Other ongoing projects with Sherwood will add value to our core ranges in the future.’
Key to the improvement was the utilization of FSC virgin fiberboard and low migration inks, which improved creasing and construction performance on the automated packing lines. Pre-production trialing ensured the final performance of the printed product was not compromised when producing commercial volumes.
Junior School Project
In another ‘green’ initiative, Sherwood Press helped pupils at Fernwood Junior School to make an Easter gift for their parents of hyacinth and daffodil bulbs planted in boxes produced by the company’s design team.
The corrugated outer case, which the pupils decorated in class, had a biodegradable inner liner filled with Eco Compost produced from waste chemicals reclaimed from the printing industry.
Graham Garrod, Sherwood’s managing director, commented: ‘Fernwood Junior School, is close to our heart, as Jeremy Bacon, our CEO, and Richard Bacon, (managing director at Loxley’s), as well as Sarah Shortt, our Group accountant, are all former pupils.’
