Address to a Haggis (packaging)

With Christmas concluded and New Year’s Eve a distant memory (plus my birthday now behind me, if you care to know) there has been a noticeable, if small, increase in Scottish goods on shelves in stores that I shop in as Burns Night nears on January 25.
Address to a Haggis (packaging)

Burns Night is celebrated on the birthday of Robert Burns, a Scottish poet and lyricist who is widely regarded as the national poet of Scotland, with Burns suppers held around the world.

Haggis forms a key part of the evening, with Burns’s own poem Address to a Haggis read prior to the traditional Scottish dish being consumed. Address to a Haggis was written by Burns to celebrate his appreciation of the savory pudding, and you can read the full text here.

As ever, it’s not the product directly that grabs my attention, haggis in this case, but rather the packaging that makes me pay attention.

As well as standing out on the shelf thanks to a  tartan pattern integrated into the design, the stand-up pouches used by Simon Howie’s Haggis Company are one I often use to illustrate the different types of product now available in flexible packaging, from pet food through to chilled specialist food items for human consumption, such as haggis.
