Spear gains food safety standard certification
Pressure-sensitive label supplier Spear has added Food Safety System Certification (FSSC) to its portfolio of standards.

Spear has achieved FSSC 22000 certification for each of its US-based facilities, South African facility and the FSSC equivalent, BRC certification, in Cwmbran, Wales.
FSSC 2200 joins Spear’s list of certifications, which includes GRACol G7, ISO 9001, 14001, and TLMI LIFE.
FSSC 2200 certification ensures that suppliers are following good industry practices from security to hygiene to waste stream control, and Spear said the certification is essential to knowing the potential hazards that could contaminate a product and putting in controls to meet them.
Dave McKell, quality director at Spear, said: ‘The scope of what is considered “food contact” has been blurred in the recent years.
‘We have ramped up our efforts for several years to ensure we are ahead of the certification curve rather than playing catch up. These certifications provide assurance to our customers that Spear is providing food-safe packaging to their global food supply chain.
‘We continue to write procedures, train, and improve our safety practices. Spear does not look at certifications as wall art but as a way to manage our quality each and every day.’
