Custom Labels sees rapid growth with Mark Andy
From a 100 USD used press to a big player in the print industry, Custom Labels shares its transformative story of investment in Mark Andy and adaptation in a rapidly changing market
Custom Labels, a New Jersey converter, has experienced a notable evolution in its operations, with continuous investment in Mark Andy technology playing a central role. Abraham Rubin, CEO and president of the company, discussed his journey and the future of Custom Labels.
Rubin revealed his path from growing up as a print broker in the label sector to founding Custom Labels in 1999 with a used press that cost only 100 USD. His first Mark Andy press was a reconditioned 4120 seven-color press, which he said significantly improved their operations. 'I bought two more and used one for spares,' Rubin stated.
The company later installed a 13 in Mark Andy Performance Series P5 in 2015 after realizing that its old presses could not keep up with demand and were becoming less cost-effective. Rubin mentioned that the press was a revelation compared to older presses and allowed them to target the shrink sleeve market and pouches, sectors they see as potential areas for growth. A second P5 was added in 2018.
Looking to the future, Rubin talked about the need for more floor space and is considering investing in wider web presses, dedicated to shrink sleeve production. 'I believe we can triple sales with our current set-up if we can become more efficient,' he stated.
Tony da Silva, VP of Sales and Product Development at Custom Labels joined Custom Labels in 2020 with 40 years of international print industry experience, and is tasked with developing the company's portfolio for new markets and innovating new products.
Discussing the recent addition of digital print technology, da Silva spoke about the decision to acquire a hybrid press that combined flexo and inkjet technology - a Digital Series HD. 'We like the concept of digital print with flexo embellishment options, and it’s allowed us to take the shorter runs off our P5s and produce them more cost-effectively with no loss of quality,' he explained.
Regarding the current state of the market, da Silva pointed out the effects of the pandemic, sustainability challenges, and the importance of lean production, reduced waste, lower power consumption and improved training in running a successful business.
Looking ahead, da Silva sees the company specializing in shrink sleeves and pouches on wider web presses. 'Custom Labels will continue to innovate new products and explore new market sectors – it’s the only route to success,' he affirmed.
The interview with Custom Labels was conducted by Nick Coombes, on behalf of Mark Andy.
