Arjo Solutions launches Safe app for authentication based on Signoptic technology

Arjo Solutions has launched a smartphone application that allows consumers to verify the authenticity of a product using its patented Signoptic material biometrics technology.

Safe, an abbreviation of Signoptic Authentication for Everyone, is based on Arjo Solutions’ Signoptic technology that uses the material structure as a fingerprint. Signoptic uses a vision system to convert the texture of a product into a unique signature via a proprietary algorithm. Because the signature is generated from non-duplicable aspects of the product itself, Signoptic allows both identification and authentication. Signoptic can be used applied to primary packaging, secondary packaging and labels. It allows verification without the addition of codes, RFID chip or printing a specific pattern on the product.

Signoptic has been available for around a decade, with multiple means to detect and read the signature of the material for authentication. A tool using a smartphone has previously been available, but requiring an app and add-on shell that is fitted to the device and adapts the phone’s optics to the technology.

Arjo Solutions quotes figures from International Chamber of Commerce that estimates counterfeiting and illicit trade is with 1.7 billion USD, and is a global issue with economic, health and social repercussions.
